A WRITER’S TO-DO LIST

TO-DO LISTS

Writers sometimes have odd to-do lists. After looking at my most recent efforts, I decided to share some of the items I had yet to cross out. Taken out of context, these might seem bad. It’s one of those “you had to be there” kinds of things. But you have to write them down and hope the FBI doesn’t raid your house. Some of them could be a little hard to explain.

To prove my point, here is part of my to-do list while working on Fourth Grave. (WARNING! There could be spoilers. I use a lot of initials, so the references may not be overt, but if you know the series, you will totally get who I’m talking about. Hope this doesn’t give too much away.) OH! And some of these scenes didn’t make the final cut, so don’t put too much stock in my list.

Here goes:

  • Kill F before the fire.
  • Add dead body to arson scene.
  • Leave getaway car running.
  • Have D tie Ch up to make his escape.
  • Have Ch’s gun disappear in hotel.
  • Leave duct tape in hotel room.
  • Don’t forget H’s clothes!
  • Hint about H: Inanimate objects are silent in death.
  • Look up ice cream.
  • Does BG stab or shoot her? Maybe a car bomb?

And the list goes on and on. To me, these make perfect sense. They would probably make perfect sense to an FBI agent, as well. He’d just draw the wrong conclusions, which would be unfortunate.

Care to share items from your to-do list? :)

Haha, this is what I do with my mini notebook I carry everywhere.

    1. Have people standing in the gas station.

    2. Husband made me mad today. Do I want to make him a character that is a murder suspect and suffers horrible luck? **Not written so nicely, had to clean it up some**

That is all I have right now.

One of the things on my list is definitely not to die of impatience until the 4th book is out!

The rest is filling reports, laugh 3x a day, feed my pets and not forgetting to do the online check-in to get a window seat! :)

So excited for book 4!!! I love this series. Thank you so much for giving it to us.

If we love a book, my friend and I have this habit of discussing who we would cast to play the characters should a movie or tv show get made. We have been doing this since book one. I was hooked immediately and called her and said you have to read this book. We finished the first two so quickly and waited very impatiently for book 3. We can’t decide which we would prefer, a movie or tv show. We are leaning towards tv show so we get to spend time with these characters weekly. LOL.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I tell everyone to read them. Great work. On my to-do list is Patiently (NOT REALLY) waiting for book 4. :)

    • Thank you so much, Kerri!!!! The series sold to CBS, so maybe we’ll get to see it on the small screen someday! I hope! Big hugs! ~D~

OMG!! No way!!! I just called my friend Liz and told her. We are so excited. If you have any say in casting the show and need help we are more than happy to help. LOL! We have decided that Jason Momoa make a great Reyes and even though she is currently on 2 Broke Girls we feel that Kat Dennings is perfect Charley. Well I hope they pick it up. Good luck :)

    My ‘To Do’ list:

    > Apologize to Hubby

    > Make a list of things things I should have done for the last 4 days, but failed to accomplish

    > Charge iPad

    > Take a nap and hope a sexy spawn of evil makes an appearence

    > Take a moment to reflect on my obsessive tendencies when it comes to reading

    > Thank Darynda for the Graves series……read all 3 within the last 4 days. :0)

    > Last, but not least……try to wait patiently for #4

I have no idea where to post this, so I’m posting this question here in the hopes I get an answer, since I do not have a facebook account.

Please, Please tell me: what is the release date for Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet???????

I’ve read all three of your other Charley Davidson books and I’m *dying* for the next one.

Counting down to the release date on my calendar will help me cope with my insanity. Not telling me when Fourth Grave is coming would be very inhumane. (JK….kinda)

;) By the way, thanks for writing such great books!!!!

Love Love LOVE this series! My cousin recommended the first two to me, not knowing that you were in the works with a third! I borrowed both the copies through the library for a weekend when I knew I would be traveling. I always take too many books when I travel, but not this time! I finished the first book while on the plane to my destination and completed the second on the return trip home!! I read the third book in a matter of a day (which is impressive for me) and then of course, I needed to check in with my cousin to see if she had read the third book! Was disappointed that she hadn’t known the third one was out.

I have recommended the series to a few other friends, and just recently started listening to the books on audio!! I canNOT wait to read the fourth book!!! I now have 2 books that will be coming out on the same day that will be long anticipated!!

I love your talent, the snarky comments, the humor, everything about the books!!! Thank you for creating Charley, Reyes, and the crew!!!

  14. Nike says:

    4) Ask you to write books 4, 5, and 6 very quickly!! I need my Charley/Reyes fix! (No pressure!) :D

  15. Erin Cole says:

    1. Make sure I’m sitting down when I read your blog so I don’t fall over laughing.

    2. Stop playing on the computer and do some work. I have a hero to torture.

    3. Reply to emails from family trying to name my town for me. I’ve got it now, thanks.

  16. Kira says:

Love these list’s. And omg you’re so right. Cops would definitely get the wrong idea!

    1. Completely understand Leon’s background.

    2. Research torture scenerios, weapons, etc

    3. Look up kick ass fighting techniques, especially samurai.

    4. Day dream about main hero, because I need a much more vivid image of him and what he can do ;) lol

  17. Rabecka says:

Hi, Darynda! I love your series, and I can’t wait to meet you with my friend Kira (above) at the Romance Writer’s tea here in Dallas in October. =)

This is just a tiny section of my endless list of crap to do with my story. LOL

    - rewrite Walter perv scene from Zoye’s perspective.
    - longterm exposure to incubus pheromones = high tolerance
    - Evan takes off before Dante’s hallucinogenic toad trip.
    - dragon telepathy

  18. [...] All the examples in this blog are from Margie grads. They know my deep editing techniques and use them well. Three are 2012 RITA Nominees: Lara Chapman, Elizabeth Essex, and Darynda Jones. [...]

  19. Donna says:

I can see how a list like that can cause trouble with a FBI raid. You are just so funny! I wanted to let you know that I am a new Charley Davidson Fan and have read all the books including the short novella in five days. I fell in love with the series due to Charley and her spunky live wire personality. She is so much fun to read. I love listening to the audiobooks. You have a great reader for the book. Anyways… Thank you for such a great series.

  20. Iced Coffee says:

    1. Hack into your list to include some C-biscuit on sponge BOB action ._. (This will definitely get the Feds after me)
    2. Fantasize about Reyes
    3. beg you for an excerpt

  21. Shellie says:

I love this series some of the best writing ever extremely creative and fun filled however first books on paperback third book larger copy now 4th book on hardcopy. For people that would like to own a consistent set of books this is just upsetting.
